Information for sponsors

Who can sponsor? You must be a British or Irish citizen, or have settled status (indefinite leave) in the UK. Exemption: From 31 January 2025, a parent or legal guardian with Ukraine-scheme leave may sponsor their own child under HFU Scottish Government. All sponsors must pass safeguarding and accommodation checks by their local authority.
As a sponsor, you must: Provide safe, rent-free accommodation for a minimum of six months, and help to support arrival logistics, integration (e.g. accessing healthcare, schools, GP registration), and maintain regular contact with the person you are sponsoring.
From 1st of April 2025, sponsors receive £350/month, regardless of how long guests stay. Paid per household, tax-free, and not means-tested. Councils also receive a £5,900 "tariff per arrival" to support hosting.
As of January 2025, UK-based sponsors under HFU (including those on UPE) can sponsor their own children, even if the sponsor is not settled. This shift has allowed families previously unable to bring children due to previous rules to reunite.
How to Become a Sponsor. Register your interest with the UK Government or via a “Recognised Provider” charity (e.g., Refugees at Home, Reset). Undergo local authority checks for accommodation suitability and DBS/safeguarding. Once approved, you match with a guest and support their visa application.
